Tahoe/Truckee school board makes union agreement official

TRUCKEE, Calif. ? The proposal to lay off 18.4 full-time equivalent certified teachers in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District came to a quiet end at Wednesday evening's school board meeting.

With no one from the sparse audience standing to speak during public comment, and no fanfare on the part of TTUSD, the board moved to adopt its agreement with Tahoe Truckee Education Association (the local teachers union), which includes a provision to rescind all the layoff notices issued to teachers in recent months.

?That was almost anti-climactic,? said Board President Kim Szczurek.

According to a previous report, both parties reached a compromise that included early retirement incentives and furlough days for teachers for the 2012-13 school year. The decision also includes a reduction of six teaching positions ? attributed not to budget cuts but to enrollment decline ? which district officials expect will happen through retirements.

Steve Dickinson, the district's assistant superintendent of finance, told the board on Wednesday that net cost savings cannot be calculated until it is known which teachers will retire and with whom they will be replaced.

His best estimate for total savings is between $700,000 and $800,000. He also believes certified staff will be asked to take two, rather than three, furlough days.
