Reddit is an ongoing source of information, images (both offensive and hilarious), activism and spontaneous acts of kindness. The social news site added to its growing CV of Internet contributions with individual?donations of up to $7,500 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) by Monday.
The 200-plus donations to EFF were inspired by a?question posted Sunday in the Reddit politics forums: "Why don't we form an Internet Freedom Association like the NRA has for firearms?"
"Hectorial" was the Reddit user who?posed the question in reference to the alphabet soup of bills?dealing with Internet freedoms --?SOPA, PIPA and most recently, CISPA, the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, just passed by the House:
The internet and its access to people nationwide is as useful (and more frequently used) tool of protecting our freedoms as firearms. Why do we not have a group or association to protect it before it is as heavily restricted and regulated as firearms? Those in power know and have witnessed the populist organizing power the internet can have which is why they are in a rush to try to take control of it.
As EFF pointed out?in a blog post thanking Redditors for the contributions, "An astute redditor commented that the Electronic Frontier Foundation fights privacy threats like CISPA each day and the public should donate to support the cause. As a result, EFF received over 200 separate donations over the past 24 hours!"
The EFF?post also noted and linked to its current work:
EFF is working hard to expose the dangers of upcoming "cybersecurity" bills and mobilize the public through advocacy campaigns to make Congress protect our civil liberties. We're also strengthening Constitutional protections in electronic search cases, asking for meaningful corporate responsibility, exposing international policies threatening online rights, and so much more.
The Daily Dot took note of the competitive nature of the donations, with contributors?one-upping each other about their stated donations in the same thread:
?Donated,? wrote GWConnoisseur, adding a screengrab of a receipt for a $100 donation. Under the field marked ?Why I?m Contributing,? GWConnoisseur had written ?Because online privacy should be acknowledged as a f***ing right!?
It almost became a game of one-upmanship. ?I just donated $25,? wrote levantingtunesmith, only to be answered by thegregling: ?I just donated $26.?
"Clearly, these redditors are particularly generous," noted the Dot's Kevin Collier. "The EFF?s cheapest non-student membership dues are $65. The NRA, meanwhile, offers a flat annual membership for just $35."
Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about Internet?privacy, then invites you to join her on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.?
