'Avengers' ups dollar power with $207.4M opening

(AP) ? "The Avengers" has extended its box-office superpowers with a record $207.4 million opening weekend domestically, an even bigger start than originally projected.

Final figures from distributor Disney on Monday put the film's debut $7.1 million higher than the studio had estimated a day earlier.

With a superstar cast, great reviews and glowing word of mouth from fans, "The Avengers" bounded past the previous record of $169.2 million set by last year's "Harry Potter" finale.

The Marvel Comics adaptation also has taken in $447.4 million overseas since it started rolling out in international markets a week earlier. That brings its worldwide total to $654.8 million in just 12 days.

The film drew in comic-book fans and general audiences alike, with the audience evenly split between those over and under 25, according to Disney. Teens packed theaters, couples came to see it as a date movie and parents with children made it a family outing.

"Fans, non-fans, parents, non-parents. Any kind of descriptor you can come up with, people are embracing this film," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution.

Over the same first weekend of May, 10 years earlier, "Spider-Man" rocked Hollywood with a $114.8 million debut, the first movie ever to open with more than $100 million in a single weekend.

"It was unthinkable. People thought, wow, a blockbuster film should do $100 million in its whole run, not just opening weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "The $200 million opening weekend is something I didn't think I would ever see, or something I wouldn't see until after I retired."

But since summer 2002, other blockbusters have nudged opening-weekend records higher and higher: 2006's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with $135.6 million; 2007's "Spider-Man 3" with $151.1 million; 2008's "The Dark Knight" with $158.4 million; and finally, last summer's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

"The Avengers" leaped beyond the "Potter" finale with a long, shrewd buildup by Marvel Studios, which had tucked teasers for its eventual superhero ensemble tale into solo films such as "Iron Man," ''Thor" and "Captain America" for years.

Directed by Joss Whedon, who has been reading "The Avengers" comics since he was a boy, the film features Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

The sum of all of those superheroes proved more than the parts. "The Avengers" already has surpassed the worldwide box-office totals for "Iron Man," ''Iron Man 2," ''Thor" and "Captain America" in their entire runs.

(AP) ? An Army nurse showed no alarm or discomfort before suddenly collapsing during a Skype video chat with his wife, who saw a bullet hole in a closet behind him, his family said Sunday.

Capt. Bruce Kevin Clark's family released a statement describing what his wife saw in the video feed recording her husband's death in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan. It's not clear how the bullet hole got in the closet.

"Clark was suddenly knocked forward," the statement from the soldier's family said. "The closet behind him had a bullet hole in it. The other individuals, including a member of the military, who rushed to the home of CPT Clark's wife also saw the hole and agreed it was a bullet hole."

The statement says the Skype link remained open for two hours on April 30 as family and friends in the U.S. and Afghanistan tried to get Clark help.

"After two hours and many frantic phone calls by Mrs. Clark, two military personnel arrived in the room and appeared to check his pulse, but provided no details about his condition to his wife," the statement said.

In the statement, Susan Orellana-Clark said she was providing details of what she saw "to honor my husband and dispel the inaccurate information and supposition promulgated by other parties."

U.S. officials in Afghanistan referred questions to the Pentagon, which previously referred questions to the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, where Clark was assigned.

The Pentagon said previously that Clark's death remains under investigation.

Clarence Davis, spokesman for William Beaumont Army Medical Center, declined to comment on Clark's family's statement.

Clark, 43, grew up in Michigan and previously lived in Spencerport, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, his wife's hometown. He joined the Army in 2006 and was stationed in Hawaii before he was assigned to the medical center in El Paso. He deployed to Afghanistan in March.

Clark's body was returned Thursday to Dover Air Force Base.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, aged 3 and 9.

'Avengers' opens to record-shattering $200.3 million

Joss Whedon's The Avengers has set a new bar in opening to a walloping $200.3 million at the domestic box office, the largest debut ever and kicking off summer 2012 in high style.

The 3D tentpole -- marking a major victory for Disney and Marvel Studios -- easily dethroned Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which opened to $169.2 million last summer, then the largest number in history.

Avengers opened a week ago overseas, earning a whopping $441.5 million through Sunday. The pic's worldwide total of $641.8 million has already surpassed the lifetime totals of Captain America: The First Avenger ($364 million), Thor ($449 million), Iron Man ($585 million) and Iron Man 2 ($624 million).

The pic -- whiich assembles Marvel superhero characters Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans),?Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) -- earned a glowing A+ CinemaScore.

PHOTOS: 28 of Summer's Most Anticipated Movies: 'Avengers,' 'Dark Knight,' 'Prometheus'?

Avengers is now positioned to reach $1 billion in global grosses in a much-needed win for Disney, which posted a $200 million loss after John Carter cratered at the box office earlier this year. It's also a validation of Marvel's strategy to build a franchise by turning out single titles -- Iron Man, Thor and Captain America -- and then bring the characters together. Avengers also could reboot The Hulk film franchise.

Among other records, Avengers is the first film in history to cross $200 million in only three days of play at the domestic box office. It also scored the biggest Saturday gross of all time in earning $69.7 million.

"It's been a fantastic weekend on every single front," Disney executive vice president of distribution Dave Hollis said.

Hollis said the slim 13 percent drop from Friday to Saturday reflects great word of mouth, as well as the fact that all segments of the audience are turning out, including families. Roughly 52 percent saw it in 3D.

PHOTOS: Avengers Premiere in Los Angeles

The tentpole played evenly in terms of age, with 50 percent of the audience under the the age of 25 and 50 percent over. Couples made up 55 percent, families 24 percent and teens 21 percent. Males represented 60 percent of the audience.

IMAX theaters reported record business, generating north of $15 million in ticket sales domestically to tie with Deathly Hallows Part 2 for the biggest opening weekend in the circuit's history. IMAX expects to finish the weekend with a worldwide cume of $31.2 million.

Avengers is the first Marvel title marketed and distributed by Disney since buying Marvel. Paramount distributed Marvel's previous films and, in exchange for ending its output deal early with Marvel, will receive a mininum of? $115 million in distribution fees for Avengers and next summer's Iron Man 3.

Avengers was the only wide release of the weekend. At the specialty box office, Fox Searchlight looked to counterprogram with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which opened in 27 theaters in 12 markets. Marigold grossed $750,301 for a pleasing per location average of $27,789.

Fox Searchlight's Sheila DeLoach said the film -- which has already a stellar $72 million overseas -- succeeded in luring baby boomers, evidenced by sold out matinee and early evening shows. Marigold stars Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson.

Drinking Coffee: Wise Choice Before A Workout : @LovingFit

May 7, 2012 by Tatianna

Coffee

?

Hi Everyone,

I hope you?ve had a wonderful weekend and got your rest. ?We are filming a new workout tonight and it will be ready tomorrow afternoon. Today we have another guest post from Diana Maria, she previously wrote an article for Loving Fit called ? 3 Tips For Finding The Best Sports Bra ?, ?let?s welcome her back :) .

?

?

Have you wondered why most people are addicted to coffee, whilst there are others who would just like to have a cup now and then but don?t take a whole pot in, well, they feel that one cup energise their system and gives them the extra energy with which they could go about working 24 hours a day. That aside, it has been prejudiced that drinking coffee before workout has a bad effect on one?s health. But that is far from the truth and here is a detailed account on the benefits of drinking coffee before workout, any day of anytime.

?

Increases Workout Performance

Drinking coffee before workout could be advantageous to people who are into exercise, on the contrary to what has been revealed in the older days about coffee being unhealthy and creates more harm than good, it can all be simply expunged now. The recent research proves that coffee increases endorphin, which means it increases workout performance, makes workout more fun and better every time. Although Caffeine doesn?t spare glycogen, it certainly augments a person?s high thus it also makes the person to give their best in the exercise. On the whole, coffee perks up endurance performance and makes workout more enjoyable and bearable.

?

Take Coffee Moderately

?

Coffee is good for one?s health provided one take it moderately. More of anything could be harmful to health so a cup or two a day will suffice. A robust person will have more body composition which means they will want more coffee but if short people take in more coffee, then the chances of falling under diabetics II and other health related problems is inevitable. Coffee comprises of 20 mg of caffeine per ounce so you should take coffee within 0.5 to 1.4mg per pound of your body weight. If you follow this, your workout will be vigorous and will yield more positive results.

?

Caffeine Gives You the Extra Kick

?

Coffee will work wonders if taken before workout since it will give you the extra kick that a person needs to keep them free from the sluggishness. However, be advised to not to substitute coffee to any other nutritional drinks for that may not go well with your body. Consuming coffee will augment the adrenaline rush and more fats are produced. When there are more fats available, glucose are spared, to be precise, this means more endurance power and long hours of work out without fatigue. For added goodness, team up your coffee with nutritional food items, like oats, fruits and so, your body will release more adrenaline which means more happy workouts.

Caffeine is more beneficial than one could give it credit for so if you are now wondering whether to go with just cup of coffee or the whole pot to boost up your adrenaline then stick with one. Or if you are planning to go with this regime the first time, then take in half a cup of coffee and see the results for yourself. Never been taking coffee a wise move than it is now, so go for it!

Europe's bad mood: Does Obama need to worry?

(AP) ? The elections that drove Nicolas Sarkozy out of power in France and left Greece scrambling to build a coalition government pose a financial threat to the United States that could undermine President Barack Obama's efforts to cast himself as the agent of a U.S. economic revival.

For Obama, the danger is that any economic turmoil unleashed by the French and Greek elections will spill over to the United States, slow the recovery even more and, ultimately, further jeopardize his re-election, adding him to the recent roster of politicians whose careers have been short-circuited by economic anger.

At the same time it has shifted Europe's political balance to the left and in favor of the type of economic growth policies that Obama has advocated both for Europe and for the United States.

For Mitt Romney, the all-but-certain Republican presidential challenger, the results in Europe underscore how deeply economic unease affects politics. They feed his camp's underlying storyline: that Obama's economic policies would not safeguard the United States from a widening European recession.

But as a rejection of austerity measures, the European elections also present a cautionary tale for the type of belt-tightening that Romney and congressional Republicans have embraced.

"It is clear there is a lot of economic anxiety in the EU that is affecting world markets, and how that affects the economy will have an impact on voters throughout this summer and into the fall," Romney adviser Kevin Madden said.

Obama senior campaign adviser David Axelrod has said repeatedly that the biggest challenge to Obama's re-election is economic developments beyond Obama's control.

"As has happened several times before, when our economy gets going, events elsewhere can intervene and throw a monkey wrench in the works," he said. "We're not hoisting a 'Mission Accomplished' banner. We know there is a lot of work left to be done and the headwinds are part of that equation."

While economic crises appear to be taking their political toll across the Atlantic, the United States is not Europe.

The anti-incumbent mood that swept through France, Greece and Italy in the past three days was fed by grievances that have little resemblance to the anxiety percolating here. Across the Atlantic, voters rebelled against deep austerity measures designed to address the 17-nation eurozone debt crisis. In the U.S., government belt-tightening has been far less severe and the debate has centered on Obama's calls for more short-term spending to stimulate a weak economic recovery.

"The debate we're having here in the United States is different than the one they're having in Europe," Madden said, "but the economy is still the premier issue that voters are using to consider their vote for president in November."

Obama advisers are quick to note the difference, saying Obama has pressed for an approach to debt reduction that includes cuts and increased revenue, such as higher taxes on wealthier taxpayers and the elimination of some tax breaks for corporations.

If the elections in Europe represented voters recoiling to austerity measures, Axelrod said, "I don't think we'll get caught up on the wrong side of that debate."

Still, the U.S. economic recovery has been weak and erratic. With millions out of work, the unemployment rate remains above 8 percent, and polls show more people disapproving of Obama's handling of the economy than approving.

The victory of Socialist Francois Hollande over the conservative Sarkozy in France and the losses sustained in Greece and Italy by mainstream parties illustrate the fierce anti-austerity backlash in Europe. But it didn't come as a surprise; since 2009 leaders in virtually every European country that tried to respond to the crisis with austerity measures have lost elections.

The United States economic downturn has not been as severe. The U.S. economy has been growing since 2009, though it has recovered slowly and erratically and has left unemployment still above 8 percent. The policy debate across the country has been one over how to stimulate the economy, with Obama pressing for more spending on jobs programs against Republican objections about the rising cost of government. But even Romney and Republicans, who have made an issue of the nation's rising debt, have proposed modest cuts compared to what Europeans have instituted.

"The European situation is quite different form the U.S.," said Simon Johnson, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former chief economist at the International Monetary fund. "Certainly if you were proposing precipitating immediate austerity in the U.S. you might reconsider it. But that is not what Romney or Obama is going to be proposing."

Romney supports the Republican budget plan offered by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and has called for even steeper domestic spending cuts and higher spending on defense. But even those cuts aren't as steep as what debt-ridden countries like Greece have had to contemplate.

Despite the fear that a European financial collapse could spread to U.S. shores, the Obama administration so far has taken the position that the Europeans can correct their own problems without assistance from the United States. Obama aides have said repeatedly that the president has no intention of adding U.S. taxpayer dollars to the IMF for any possible bailout of a eurozone country, a step that would invite opposition from congressional Republicans.

That leaves Obama with few options to stave off European financial disaster, Johnson said. And even when it comes to protecting the U.S. economy, Obama's best bet rests with the Federal Reserve, which Johnson faulted for letting banks reduce their capital reserves to pay off dividends.

The European financial network, intricately intertwined with the U.S. banking system, looks more precarious after the election results, Johnson said, adding: "We should be building up capital buffers against losses."

The economy aside, the election results in France pose new foreign policy challenges for Obama.

Hollande has vowed to pull French troops out of Afghanistan by the end of the year.

What's more, Obama is looking for European countries to help with the U.S. commitment to assist Afghanistan rebuild and sustain internal security after all U.S. combat troops leave in 2014. Those pledges will be at the center of discussions when Obama hosts fellow leaders for the May20-21 NATO summit in Chicago.

The questions, said Heather Conley of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, is whether Europe can make that commitment based on both its political and austerity constraints.

And, she added, can the U.S. seek such European support without making some financial commitment to helping the eurozone solve its debt crisis.

"It's ironic that at the same moment we're telling them to take care of this yourself," she said, "we are asking them to fulfill their pledge."
